Midwifery Group Practice

The Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) is a program run by Armadale Health Service (AHS) for women who prefer to be cared for by the same midwife throughout their pregnancy and postnatal period.

Your primary care will be provided by a midwife or a small team of midwives in partnership with a GP Obstetrician. This aims to provide continuity of carer from a named midwife for women and their families.

What are the benefits of the MGP program?

Evidence shows that continuity of carer provided by a dedicated midwife results in improved outcomes for mothers and babies including:

  • greater birth satisfaction for mothers
  • safer birth outcomes for babies
  • better breastfeeding outcomes
  • reduced likelihood of birth interventions such as the use of narcotic medications, epidural, episiotomy, inductions and caesarean sections
  • shorter stay in hospital post birth
  • reduced likelihood of postnatal depression and access to support if necessary.

How will I be cared for through this program?

The MGP program is available to all women living within the Armadale Health Service catchment area and other specific geographical areas.

Your primary care will be provided by a midwife dedicated to you and this care is supplemented by a small team of midwives.

Primary midwifery care is provided throughout your pregnancy and after you have your baby for up to 10 days at home if necessary.

Your labour care may be carried out by your primary midwife or one of the MGP midwives if labour occurs after hours.

If you have a normal birth without complications, you can expect to be discharged home with the support of your primary midwife between 6 to 12 hours following birth.

Antenatal care

Your antenatal appointments with your midwife will take place in your home or at our MGP clinic located at the Community Health and Development Centre at 3056 Albany Highway, Mount Nasura.

You will also be required to see a GP Obstetrician during your pregnancy as part of your holistic care plan.

As part of your antenatal care, you will be given the opportunity to meet all the midwives within the team that will be providing your care and other women enrolled in the program at a special “Meet the Midwives” antenatal group session held at our clinic.

How do I access the MGP Program?

If you are less than 32 weeks pregnant and live within the Armadale, Gosnells and Serpentine-Jarrahdale local government areas, you will be eligible to access the MGP program.

Contact the MGP clinic on 9391 2230 to find out more or ask your midwife at your next antenatal appointment to refer you to the program.
