Admissions - arriving for surgery

When you arrive

Adults: Go to the Same Day Unit, upstairs on the first floor, for elective surgery or an infusion, blood transfusion, biopsy or other medical procedure,

The Same Day Unit caters for:

  • Patients admitted on the day of their surgery who leave the same day. This is called "same day" surgery
  • Patients who will be admitted on the day of their surgery and stay overnight
  • Patients who are admitted to a surgical ward one or two days before their surgery for treatment
  • Patients transferred from the Emergency Department
Note: Children under 16 arriving for surgery should go to the Campbell Ward on the same floor. 

Preparing for surgery

Shower the night before and in the morning using liquid soap. Do not apply any lotions, creams, powders or deodorant. Remove all nail polish, makeup and jewellery.

What to bring

Same day patients:

  • Medications, including hypoglycaemic medications or insulin if you take them
  • Any x-rays or scans relating to your procedure
  • Letter from your surgeon or anaesthetist if provided
  • Non-slip slippers and dressing gown if possible

Overnight patients:

  • A change of clothes
  • Pyjamas or nightgown, dressing gown and non-slip slippers as it is important for footwear to be worn at all times
  • Soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, shaving kit and tissues
  • Medications, including hypoglycaemic medications or insulin if you take them
  • Letter from your surgeon or anaesthetist if provided
  • A small amount of money for newspapers, magazines, telephone calls and to hire a television.
  • Any X-rays or scans relating to your procedure

Personal belongings

Do not bring jewellery, other valuables or excess cash to hospital. The health service is not responsible or liable for any damage or loss related to such items.
