Celebrating NAIDOC week

July 25, 2014

Armadale Health Service (AHS) recently celebrated the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people at a NAIDOC Week event with a flag raising ceremony, Welcome to Country and morning tea for guests.

Speaking at the event, AHS Director Nursing and Midwifery, Gary Colley reminded guests of the health service’s commitment to improving the wellbeing of Aboriginal people by providing services in a culturally appropriate manner.

“We need to ensure we respect the holistic view of health held by Aboriginal people and take into account their values, beliefs, rights and customs,” Gary said.

“Initiatives we already in place include the provision of Aboriginal cultural awareness training for all staff and having Aboriginal Health Officers and Grandmother Liaisons on site to provide support to our patients and staff.”
