Clean hands save lives was a topic of conversation for staff and visitors at Armadale and Kalamunda hospitals recently, with the importance of hand hygiene and infection prevention during a hospital stay being on display.

The infection prevention team was out in numbers, providing any staff member or visitor passing the display with information on how they can play their role in “Spreading the Word Not the Germs” – the theme of this year’s infection prevention week events.

Gerardine Sale said health care associated infections can be significantly reduced with appropriate hand cleaning techniques before and after every patient contact.

“When a patient’s treating team enters the hospital room we endeavour to carry out the World Health Organisation 5 Moments of hand hygiene – the global benchmark of when to clean your hands,” Gerardine said.

“It is important for a patient’s loved ones to also know how they can play their role when visiting them in hospital.”

Hand hygiene dispensers containing alcohol-based rubs can be found at all main ward entrances as well as public areas throughout the hospital.

If you are visiting a family member or friend and are unsure on how to correctly wash your hands or can’t access a cleansing gel/foam dispenser, please ask one of our friendly staff members for assistance.
