Anaesthetic for children – information for parents

  • Anaesthesia ensures your child’s surgery can be performed without pain.
  • An anaesthetic is a drug that produces a complete or partial loss of feeling.
  • In paediatric surgery this is most often a general anaesthetic, where your child will be unconscious for the duration of their surgery/procedure.
  • All anaesthetics are given either by a doctor who has specialised training in anaesthesia, or by a supervised doctor who is training to be a specialist.
