It is with great pleasure Armadale Health Service extends congratulations to our own Dr Nick Waldron for his win at the WA Health Excellence Awards.

Dr Waldron was awarded the Jill Porteous Memorial Award for Quality and Safety. This award, now in its fourth year, recognises an individual who demonstrates a substantial and sustained contribution to the achievement of continuous improvement in safety and quality at WA Health.

During his 14 years as a clinician in WA Health, Dr Waldron has led multiple quality initiatives to improve patient care. Most recently this encompasses development of the “Goals of Patient Care” (GoPC) program which promotes shared decision-making between a doctor and a patient whose condition may deteriorate whilst in hospital.

This initiative which places patients’ needs, values and preferences at the centre of care started as a trial in our Rehabilitation Ward. Results from the innovative trial showed improvements in decision-making related to clinical deterioration and CPR, clinical handover and shared communication. From the patient’s perspective their own involvement and that of their family also markedly improved. The success of the trial led to a staged roll out across WA Health and currently the GoPC initiative has been implemented in more than 14 WA hospitals.

Please congratulate and celebrate with Dr Waldron and our other finalist, the Complex Care Coordination Service, who embody the AKG values in their everyday work and take pride in delivering safe, quality care for our community.

More information on the other winning health initiatives is available on the Department of Health website.
